Responsible use of natural resources

LIPROMAR is committed to the sustainable use of natural resources. Our partner in this endeavour is the fish-processing industry, which supplies all our raw materials. These food-grade materials are transported to Cuxhaven in a continuous cold chain under special conditions stipulated by the food industry. This means that rather than being discarded, these valuable fish by-products can be used for human consumption.

There’s more to a fish than the fillet

  • The demand for fish is enormous. Germany alone consumed a total of 1.15 million tonnes of fish and fishery products in 2015. That equates to 14.1 kg (catch weight) of fish per head of the population (source: Fish Information Centre FIZ, Hamburg). Of course, this figure also includes industrially produced items such as fish fingers. While smaller fish like anchovies are processed whole, salmon and tuna have to be filleted prior to sale. The by-products of the filleting process – heads, trimmings, spines, etc. – are still rich in nutrition and thus a valuable source of ingredients for the food industry. LIPROMAR specialises in converting these raw materials into high-quality fish oils and proteins.

MSC and ASC certification

  • LIPROMAR is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). The blue MSC label is a globally recognised mark indicating that a wild fish has been responsibly caught and that it can be traced back to a certified sustainable source. The ASC, meanwhile, is the world’s leading certification and labelling programme for responsibly farmed seafood.
